Change in the column density of Si II due to the increase by a factor of 2 in the ionizing flux for clouds with a different total hydrogen column density (NH). For clouds that did not form the H I ionization front (log(NH) ≲ 20.5 [cm−2]), the variation in column density is much higher than for the clouds that formed the ionization front.
