Schematic representation of the layered planetary structure. Three main layers are present: the core, silicate mantle, and volatile layer. Depending on the size of the layers, an upper mantle can be present if the volatile layer above is not too massive. Conversely, if the volatile layer is massive enough, high-pressure ices might form on the bottom of the layer.
