Table 6

Comparison between the VUV-absorption cross sections in the 120160 nm range of all the species in the gas and solid phase.

Species Total Int. Avg. Ly-α LBS 121.6 nm 157.8 nm 160.8 nm

Solid phase
CH4 15 1.5
CO2 1.0 3.6
N2 0.0023 0.007 0.003 0.001 0.001
O2 1.5 5.4

CH4b 2.9 8.2 18

O2d 3.3 4.0 2.5 6.5 4.7

Notes. Total Int. is the total integrated VUV-absorption cross section in this range, Avg. is the average VUV-absorption cross section. Ly-α and LBS are the average VUV-absorption cross sections in the 120.8122.6 nm and 132162 nm range normalized by the photon flux. The last three columns are the VUV-absorption cross sections at wavelengths 121.6 nm (corresponding to the maximum intensity of the Ly-α peak), 157.8 and 160.8 nm (main peaks of the Lyman band system). All the VUV-absorption cross-section values in the table need to be multiplied by 1 × 10-18 cm2, as indicated below.
