ESO and EDP Sciences sign new contract for A&A © ESO

A new contract for the publication of the scientific journal Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A) has been signed with EDP Sciences (EDPS), by Prof Tim de Zeeuw, Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), and Dr Jean-Marc Quilbé, Managing Director of EDPS, at the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany.

It is a great pleasure for the Board to announce that the contract for the production of A&A from January 2010 has been signed at ESO with EDP Sciences. Thus, for a renewed period, EDPS will continue as the publisher of A&A”, said Professor Georges Meynet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of A&A.

The Board is in charge of managing the journal. It consists of representatives of A&A’s 23 member countries plus ESO, which has handled the legal matters of A&A since the journal was established in 1969.

Astronomy & Astrophysics is owned by and operated for the astronomical community, and it is important that we make sure that we have the best available publisher for the journal”, said Prof de Zeeuw.

EDPS is excited to be continuing as the publisher of this major journal of astronomy, which is an important vehicle for the dissemination and archiving of high quality science results”, said Dr Quilbé.

Following a “call for tender” issued by the Board to select a publisher for the coming years, EDPS emerged as the optimum choice. The Board thanks all bidders for their interest in A&A.

In this remarkable year of international astronomy, Astronomy & Astrophysics is proud to inform you of its poster sponsorship of the IAU General Assembly which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 3-14, 2009.

A special issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics celebrating the Journal's 40th anniversary will be published in June (Volume 500 Issue 1) and complimentary copies will be available at the Rio de Janeiro IAU GA.

This vibrant city is not only a prime tourist destination but also a great concentration of scientific and technological activities making it one of the most important centers in Brazil and Latin America. It is in this very place that the first Brazilian national observatory was established by the Emperor Dom Pedro I in 1827.

At the 2009 General Assembly 4 discourses with invited speakers, 6 symposia, 16 joint discussions, 10 special sessions, the Women in Astronomy Lunch Meeting and 2 young astronomers' events will all be taking place.

The IAU`s XXVII General Assembly is organized by the Brazilian Astronomical Society for the International Astronomical Union in the context of the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

International Year of Astronomy 2009 is endorsed by the United Nations and the International Council of Science (ICSU).

EDP Sciences has the pleasure to inform you of the new 1.7 version of this platform.

This version offers a new graphic design, and a more user-friendly introduction page to the articles. In particular, the tools at the disposal of the reader (recommend this article, search by authors, article citing this article,...) are placed on the right of the abstract, which make them more visible and which allow us to include new functionalities:

  • the reader is informed when the article is cited ("citation alert") and/or when an erratum is published ("correction alert");
  • links to social bookmarking sites are added (Bibsonomy, CiteULike, Connotea, Del.icio.us, Digg and Facebook);
  • the use of the tool "dowload citation" is extended to EndNote and Reference Manager;
  • the Open URL is implemented for abstracts.
So don't delay visiting the journal website to discover these new functionalities.

EDP Sciences and A&A are glad to announce the “Second Astronomy and Astrophysics School: Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers” which will be held in Blankenberge, Belgium, from 18 to 20 May 2009.

The direct purpose of organising an “A&A School” is to teach young authors how to express their scientific results through adequate and efficient science writing. In other words: how to write scientific papers for different forums (journals, proceedings, thesis manuscripts, etc.).
