Characterizing young protostellar disks with the CALYPSO IRAM-PdBI survey: large Class 0 disks are rare
The earliest phases of protoplanetary disk evolution are still poorly understood, and investigating them requires sub-arcsecond resolution observations. This paper presents the results of 1.3 and 3 mm-wavelength continuum observations of a sample of 16 Class 0 protostars in the framework of the Continuum And Lines in Young ProtoStellar Objects (CALYPSO) survey, carried out using the IRAM PdBI. By modeling the observed visibilities with an envelope and a Gaussian disk-like component, the authors conclude that while most Class 0 protostars show evidence of embedded disks, only 4 out of the 16 protostars are likely to harbor large (> 60au) protostellar disks. This higher occurrence of small disks in the youngest protostars favors magnetized models of rotating protostellar collapse, since the magnetic fields can reduce the envelope rotation and delay the formation of large disks.
