Probing interstellar turbulence in cirrus with deep optical imaging: no sign of energy dissipation at 0.01 pc scale
By combining infrared emission maps from the Planck and WISE satellites, and scattered light optical images from CFHT for the same region, Miville-Deschênes et al. probe interstellar dust with unequaled sharpness, on scales that range from an arcsecond to ten degrees. They can therefore investigate interstellar turbulence over spatial scales from 0.01 to 10 pc, and find that the density spectrum of the diffuse interstellar medium is a single power law over this very broad range of scales. This demonstrates that the dissipation scale of the interstellar turbulence cascade must be smaller than 0.01 pc, a strong constraint on its mechanism.
