The population of X-ray supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud

by P. Maggi, F. Haberl, P. J. Kavanagh, et al. A&A 585, A162

Supernova remnants (SNRs) hold the memory of the formation and death of massive stars in a galaxy. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton observations of all SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud. As a result this paper provides the first homogeneous catalog of SNR X-ray spectral properties. The authors explore many properties of these SNRs, including the chemical abundances, the current ratio of core collapse to Type Ia supernovae, and the X-ray luminosity function. In particular, the SNR population is heavily affected by the recent star formation episode that occurred in the LMC ~1 Gyr ago, showing a remarkable number of bright remnants.
