LOFAR: The LOw-Frequency ARray

LOFAR, the LOw-Frequency ARray, is a new radio interferometer that explores the 10-240 MHz frequency range with unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution. The authors give an overview of the LOFAR instrument, its major hardware, and software components, and then present a selection of exciting new results from the commissioning phase of the observatory.
