Constraints on mass loss and self-enrichment scenarios for the globular clusters of the Fornax dSph

VLT/UVES studies have shown that the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal are much more metal poor than the bulk of the field star population in this galaxy. This discrepancy makes this system an excellent probe of the fraction of stars from these globular clusters that could have ended up in the field star population of this galaxy and thus of the early evolution of and loss of stars from globular clusters. The limit to the fraction of stars lost that can be derived from this comparison is difficult to reconcile with scenarios for the self-enrichment and early evolution of globular clusters in which a large fraction (90%-95%) of the first generation of stars are lost. The Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy may be a rosetta stone for constraining theories of the formation, self-enrichment, and early dynamical evolution of globular clusters.
