PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP). A Herschel key program
This paper presents the methodology of the PACS galaxy evolution survey, the first results were presented in the Herschel special issue of A&A Letters (2010, Vol. 518), focusing on the field selection criteria, observing procedure, and exposure details, and on the data analysis pipeline to study the evolution to z = 3. All 18 fields, ranging from 4'x4' to 85'x85' in angular area, were observed at 100 and 160 μm. A number were also observed at 70, 250, 350, and 500 μm. The fields were selected for low cirrus background and studied at other wavelengths. Redshifts were assigned from multiband photometry. Sample analyses are also presented for the gravitationally lensing cluster A2218 and GOODS-N, and the latter shows the sensitivity of the study to z>3 (for z>1.5 the lower limit is log L(FIR) > 12).
