Variations of the fragmentation rate ϕ (a), mean fragment mass 〈M〉 ∝ Rϕ−ξ (b), and mean fragment density 〈ρ〉 ∝ Rϕ−ξ−3 (c) as a function of their spatial scale R for different initial cloud densities ρ0 with an isothermal EOS using ξ = 0. The legend of (a) is common to the three plots. The scaling relation M ∝ R in (b) indicates the asymptotic limits of a marginally unstable Bonnor-Ebert structure (Bonnor 1956). The scaling relation ρ ∝ R−2 in (c) represents the density profile of a self-gravitating isothermal sphere (Shu 1977).
