Projection of three-dimensonal ellipsoids into two dimensional ellipses. The parental (blue) object have fragmented into two child (orange) fragments. The merging condition of both child is regulated by their centre-to-centre distance d and their 2D size according to Eq. C.5. If they merge the number of children we may perceive in 2D is reduced, effectively reducing the two dimensional fragmentation rate one may measure.
