Simplified view to describe the entrapment in a compact ice adapted from Hasegawa & Herbst (1993) and Fayolle et al. (2011). It shows the ice structure before (left) and after (right) molecules of CO desorb from the surface to the gas phase, with the bulk ice mantle, surface monolayer, and gas phase delineated. k is the extend of the pathway left in the ice due to the first peak of CO desorption.
