Cartoon representation of this paper’s findings. On the left is a representation of the canonical view of super-Earths (e.g., Ginzburg et al. 2016), with a frozen or molten silicate core in good thermal contact with a convective gas envelope. On the right we show our proposed model, with a layer of static stability between a (possibly hydrogen-polluted) supercritical fluid core and the silicate-vapor-enriched gas envelope.
