Different projections of velocity space for the various subsets considered in this chapter: thick-disc, TDtail, and pure halo from top to bottom. The lower density of stars present in these top panels for small values of v_R and v_z is due to the exclusion of thin-disc stars in our selection. We note that even our pureHalo subset contains some stars with ‘hot’ thick-disc-like kinematics (as evidenced by the arch-like structure in the bottom central panel). Red dashed curves in the bottom panel outline the structures that are mentioned in the text.
