Detection of the Small Magellanic Cloud in gamma-rays with Fermi/LAT

by A. A. Abdo, M. Ackermann, M. Ajello, P. Martin, et al., A&A 523, A46 alt

This is the first comprehensive gamma ray survey of the SMC and, as for the survey of the LMC with Fermi, is a view of the high-energy processes in a dwarf galaxy that will have fundamental implications for the study of clusters of galaxies and acceleration processes. In particular, the low cosmic-ray density inferred from the emission indicates a low confinement that places constraints on the structure of the SMC halo and the possible escape of high-energy particles from similar systems.
