Structure of the magnetoionic medium around the Fanaroff-Riley Class I radio galaxy 3C449

This work determines the strength and structure of the magnetic field associated with the cluster hot gas surrounding the radio source 3C 449. The authors use VLA images obtained at 3 frequencies, and analyze the Faraday rotation produced by the foreground material in front of the polarized radio source. Their derived model of magnetic field fluctuations agrees with numerical simulations very well. The average magnetic field strength at the cluster center is 3.5 +/- 1.2 micro-Gauss, decreasing linearly with gas density within ~16kpc of the nucleus.
