HIGHLIGHTS: this week in A&A |
Volume 477-3 (January III 2008)
In section 6. Interstellar and circumstellar matter
“Interstellar 12C/13C from CH+ absorption lines: results from an extended survey”, by O. Stahl, S. Casassus, and T. Wilson, A&A 477, p. 865 The authors present a very accurate determination of the isotopic ratio 12C/13C from CH+ observations in the local diffuse gas. The observed variations suggest that the ISM is not very well mixed, which is important for studies of the dispersion in stellar abundances. |

In section 4. Extragalactic astronomy
“IMAGES.I. Strong evolution of galaxy kinematics since z=1”, by Y.B. Yang, H. Flores, F. Hammer et al., A&A 477, p. 789 This paper presents the results of a new high-redshift (0.4 < z < 0.8) survey of galaxy morphology and kinematics, using VLT/GIRAFFE integral field spectroscopy. The sample includes 63 galaxies, a significant fraction of which (over 40%) display kinematics indicating they are neither relaxed nor pressure-supported. About half of these show evidence of more complex dynamics, far more than a local sample. The authors suggest that the subsequent process of dynamical adjustment must be rapid. |
