Top: stellar mass function of the TNG galaxies selected in color and stellar mass, and whose effective radii are well-resolved, as described in Sect. 5.1. The stellar mass functions of both TNG50 and TNG100 agree well with Atlas3D. Bottom: stellar mass function of the final sample of ETGs, selected in color, stellar mass, and intrinsic shape as described in Sects. 5.1 and 5.2. The removal of centrally elongated objects mostly changes the low-mass part of the TNG50 mass function, while that of TNG100 is still in good agreement with Atlas3D.
