Top panels: result of a galaxy evolution model following the formalism for mass quenching, as described in Peng et al. (2010). These assume a formation redshift of zform = 10 (left panel) and zform = 4 (right panel), and the panels compare the results at z = 1.2. For easy comparison, the right panel was renormalised by a factor 5.6 so that both panels have the same number of galaxies in the plotted mass range. Lower panels: relative fraction of quiescent galaxies for the model runs with the two different formation redshifts. In this model, we observe a qualitatively similar SMF of quiescent galaxies in both panels, and the same similarity for star-forming galaxies. Moreover, the mass-dependent QFE of the zform = 10 population compared to the zform = 4 population is similar to what we observe (cf. Fig. 7). Details on the model are given in Sect. 5.2 and in Peng et al. (2010).
