Schematic representation of the top down mechanochemical process performed with a planetary ball mill (upper) and high-energy mill (lower). The milling impacts and shattering modify the size or crosslink graphite grains, flakes, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes down to the nanometre scale, and a defect-induced chemistry takes place in the pressurised hydrogen-reducing atmosphere.
