Top view of the system. For a lunar eclipse, the moon is in the shadow of the planet, and the orbital phases must be equal: ϑ = φ modulo 2π. For a planetary eclipse, with the planet in the shadow of the moon, the orbital phases are opposite: ϑ = φ + π modulo 2π.
