Notes. We provide values for the ratio between the masses of the primary and secondary progenitors, η; the reduced mass of the system, μ; the initial modulus of the relative position vector of the galaxy centres and its time derivative, r0 and ν0; the initial orbital circularity, ϵ; and the initial pericentric distance rper. All mergers take place on the XY plane, with the orbital spin lying along the Z + axis and the relative position vector initially directed along the X + axis, so that νx,0 and νy,0 are the radial and tangential components of the initial relative velocity, respectively. The principal axes of the galaxies are initially aligned with the Cartesian axes. All dimensional quantities are given in simulation units (see Sect. 2.1).
