PDFs of molecular clouds considered in this Letter, together with the PDF generated by a simple toy model (truncated isothermal profile, see Sect. 4) as a black dashed line. The PDFs have been corrected for the superposition bias by subtracting a constant offset to the dust extinction maps used to derive them.
