Bouy et al. (2003) resolved the companion Gl 417 B as a tight binary. Kirkpatrick et al. (2008) classified this object L4.5pec in the optical and suggest it is composed of a pair of L4 + L6/L6.5 or L4.5 + L6.5/L7 brown dwarfs using a relation between MI and spectral types.
