Line profiles of the emergent 14.4 keV 57Fe line, originally emitted as an axion, and mode converted at various optical depths in the solar atmosphere. The electron scattering opacities through which the various profiles have propagated are noted. The dashed curve gives the original unscattered profile. At an opacity of  ≃5, the central narrow line has essentially disappeared.
