Acquisition images of Jupiter between 07:30 and 07:40 UT on July 26 2009, just prior to echelle spectroscopy of the impact site from VLT/VISIR. White arrows show the location of the impact feature. Panel a) shows the appearance of Jupiter at 10.0 μm and the bright impact debris field (silicate and ammonia emission) in the image center). Panel b) shows that this bright point is also centrally located in the slit, and was in the center of the frame for echelle spectroscopy.
