Table 1:

Radii of M giants in binary systems derived from the Stefan-Boltzmann law ( $R_{\rm SB}$ ) and from high-angular resolution measurements ( $R_{\rm HR}$ ). The labels ``UD'' and ``LD'' refer to uniform discs or limb-darkened discs, respectively. Luminosities are derived from the Hipparcos parallaxes $\varpi$ , from the 2MASS K magnitudes and bolometric corrections BC_K derived from the (V-K , BC_K) analytical relation from Bessell & Wood (1984), which is in good agreement with the more recent calibration of Bessell et al. (1998). The Johnson V_Jmagnitude from the Hipparcos catalogue has been used. Effective temperatures are derived from the V_J-K indices using the ``bcd'' calibration of Bessell et al. (1998).
