Comparison of two synthetic fringe patterns: black for a perfectly collimated source, where the fringe pattern follows the Airy formula in Eq. (1), and red for a source with a small range in effective period (P/Δ P = 2000) that mimics an extended source. The resulting reduction in effective fringe amplitude is readily apparent.
