Projections of the neutral hydrogen column density (top), temperature (middle), and metallicity (bottom) along the RA direction through the cosmosTNG-A simulation at z = 2 for a 10 cMpc/h depth with the redshift (declination) on the x-axis (y-axis). In the top panel, we also mark simulated galaxies and black holes with masses above 1010 M and 108 M, respectively. Thin filaments of neutral hydrogen span the volume and at its nodes, massive galaxies reside whose AGN heat and metal-enrich their surroundings. The white box in the top panel indicates the zFIRE cluster zoomed-in region shown in Fig. 5.
