Dust surface density at the time when self-gravity has reached its full strength in a simulation without sink particles. The gravitationally unstable dust clumps found by the clump finding algorithm described in the main text are overplotted in blue if they are among the 25 most massive, and in orange otherwise. These most massive clumps, most notably one located at x = −0.2 H and y = 0.6 H, tend to be more extended than compact structures.
