The colours represent the Goldschmidt classification (Goldschmidt 1937), which groups metals into their geochemical preferences with atmophiles (gas-loving; blue), lithophiles (silicate-loving; green), chalcophiles (sulfur-loving; yellow) and siderophiles (iron-loving; red). Metals that have two colours within their box exhibit both siderophilic and lithophilic characteristics. The box containing H indicates the number of He-atmosphere white dwarfs with trace-H detections and vice versa for the box with He.
