Spurious “observed” polarization P due to noise in successive annuli of increasing radius around the quasar, according to simulations assuming zero real polarization. The limiting radii (inner and outer radius) of each annulus are given in the upper right box in pixel units; there are four pixels per arcsec, so the outermost radius (22 pixels) corresponds to 5.5″. The corresponding cumulative probability distributions are given.
