Distribution of best-fit position angle (in degrees) of the forward jet by fitting model images with the 2017 (April 6, high-band) and 2018 (April 21, band 4) observations. The best-fit 10% of images (solid lines) among all (∼18 000) images (dashed lines) are also shown. For reference, the vertical line shows the position angle ∼288° of the milliarcsecond-scale jet (Walker et al. 2018; Cui et al. 2023), with the orange shadow area from (288 − 10)° to (288 + 10)°. While the fitted model images include different black hole spins, accretion types, and different electro-thermodynamics (M 87 2017 V; M 87 2017 VIII), the black hole spin vector is pointing away from Earth in all images. The 2018 EHT results are consistent with a black hole spin vector pointing away from Earth.
