(J–H) versus (H–K) for hydrostatic dust-free carbon star models from the COMARCS grid presented in Aringer et al. (2016, 2019, green squares). Two C/O ratios are shown: 1.4 and 2.0. The results are compared to a similar grid computed with updated opacities for molecular and atomic transitions (red circles). The large shift between the two sets of models is due to changes of the absorption caused by C2 and C2H2. In addition, observed values of carbon stars are included (crosses); they cover objects with solar and subsolar metallicities (see text).
