1D spectrum of P144+50 taken using the IDS instrument on the 2.5 m INT. The characteristic break blueward of the Lyα line is clearly visible, unambiguously identifying it as a high-redshift quasar with a redshift of z = 5.66 based on its Lyα emission. Some flux is seen around the expected Lyβ and O IV features. Apart from Lyα, there are no clear emission lines visible in the spectrum due to the limited sensitivity of the INT. The orange line indicates the noise level of the spectrum.
