Table 1.
Comparison of Virgo and Fornax.
Cluster | Mass | Velocity | Relative gas | Massive | Central galaxy |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
dispersion | density | galaxies | density | ||
Virgo | 1.7 × 1014 M⊙ | 753 (1340) km s−1 | 1 | 69 | 250 Mpc−3 |
Fornax | 6 × 1013 M⊙ | 356 ± 31 (405 ± 45) km s−1 | 1/4 | 18 | 500 Mpc−3 |
Notes. The mass estimates are the fiducial values in Weinmann et al. (2011, see also references therein). The velocity dispersions are given for the ETGs and, in parentheses, for the LTGs (Boselli & Gavazzi 2006; Drinkwater et al. 2001). The relative gas density is based on the logarithmic gas density profiles in Jones et al. (1997, their Fig. 6), which are approximately offset by a constant factor as a function of radius in linear physical units. The number of massive galaxies is that of the galaxies with M⋆ > 1010 M⊙ in our sample. The central galaxy number densities are from Ferguson (1989b).
