Velocities estimated from the P Cygni minima of Hα (green), Hβ (blue), and Fe IIλ5169 (red) for the three SNe discussed throughout the paper. The normal Type II SN 1999em shows a fast decline in expansion velocities, whereas iPTF14hls exhibits virtually constant velocities, with the Fe velocity significantly lower than those estimated from Balmer lines at all epochs. For SN 2020faa we probe intermediate phases and see a slowing down of the photosphere, but with velocities very similar to those demonstrated by iPTF14hls at the common epochs around 150 days.
