Modelled magnetic field of the transition region and lower corona in a polar coronal hole based on measurements of the photospheric magnetic field. This figure illustrates the complex connections between the solar surface and the heliosphere: only the black field lines extend far from the surface. One of Solar Orbiter’s key objectives is to determine the links between the observed solar wind streams and their source regions (from Marsch et al. 2006).
