Herschel column density map of the Musca filament (Cox et al. 2016) inserted into the extinction map of the Musca cloud(Schneider et al. 2011), which is scaled to the Herschel column density map. The filament crest is defined as N > 3 × 1021 cm−2 (purple and white). The region outlined by a red rectangle is the zoom displayed in Fig. 2. The ambient cloud is displayed in green and blue. The northern and southern areas mapped with FLASH+ on the APEX telescope are indicated in black. The triangle indicates the location of the only YSO in the Musca filament.
