Fractional difference in the disc fragmentation mass for different values of the parameter χ, which regulates the disc accretion rate (see Eq. (5)). The reference value is the disc fragmentation mass for χ = 0.05 (denoted as ). The corresponding mass accretion rates for χ = [0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5] are disc = [1.25, 1.88, 2.5, 5, 12.5] × 10−6Myr−1, respectively. We show that for values of χ ≤ 0.1, there is only a small difference (≤5%) in the disc fragmentation mass. As such, a value of χ = 0.1 is adopted for the work presented here. The difference in the disc fragmentation mass between χ = 0.05 and χ = 0.5 is relatively small (~20%).
