Harmonic and anharmonic potentials. Harmonic potentials can be described by a parabolic function, which is a symmetric well, that closes on both sides. A molecule does not break up with such a harmonic potential. Anharmonic potential is an asymmetric and open well. At certain vibrational states, a molecule dissociates.
