Table 1.
Scaling relations for the specific angular momentum j as a function of cloud mass and size.
Property | M 33 | rms | M 51 | rms |
---|---|---|---|---|
j(M)all | 48.9 (M/106 M⊙)0.51 | 3.0 | 53.4 (M/106 M⊙)0.39 | 2.4 |
j(M)strong | 42.6 (M/106 M⊙)0.68 | 3.0 | 47.3 (M/106 M⊙)0.42 | 2.4 |
j(R)all | 42.0 (R/60 pc)1.82 | 2.1 | 86.7 (R/60 pc)1.55 | 1.9 |
j(R)strong | 37.1 (R/60 pc)1.90 | 2.1 | 79.3 (R/60 pc)1.63 | 1.9 |
Notes. The relations found by Phillips (1999) are j(M) = 79.4 (M/106 M⊙)0.72 and j(R) = 49.9 (R/60 pc)1.27. The scatter (rms) is a factor indicating the deviation from the relation given in the table, typically a factor 2 or 3. The normalizations at 106 M⊙ and 60 pc were chosen as typical of the extragalactic clouds.
