Sketch showing how vertical motions produce a distinct signature on the inferred H I kinematics depending on the EPG thickness, inclination, orientation and surface density profile. In this case, the presence of a vertical inflow (red and blue arrows) and a radially declining surface density profile (shades of green) produce a redder or bluer-shifted signal depending on which galaxy side is considered.
