Schematic illustration of heat transfer through the granular, porous subsurface of a comet nucleus under solar illumination. The outermost layer is desiccated, leaving behind a dust mantle that lies above the mixture of dust and ice aggregates. Conduction takes place through the aggregates that are in contact. Radiation occurs inside the pores; porosity of the individual aggregates is neglected.
