Test of the model for calculating molecular cloud distances with simulated on-cloud stars. The simulated molecular cloud is assumed to be located at a distance of 300 pc. The reference values of parameters are displayed in the top left panel, and we change one parameter at any one time to see the variation in distance. Left column: simulated raw data. Right column: corresponding binned data and derived distance results with the model. The raw extinction AG and distances are averaged every 5 pc, weighted by their errors. Only raw data are used in the distance estimation, while the binned data are only used to confirm the results by eye.
