Notes. Results when calculating the forces from spherical spiral-arm elements, by analytical calculation and by numerical interpolation following our standard procedure, respectively, are shown. In the bottom row the results of neglecting the spiral arms altogether are displayed. N(GMC) = 10 000, Dispersions in U, V and W velocities in km s-1 are given. The fraction of the test particles ending with a distance greater than 400 pc from the Galactic plane is <0.5% in all cases.
