Illustration of the mirror symmetry principle for the reflection matrix. If the incident beam of radiation, i1, produces (among others), a beam of reflected radiation, r1, then the incident beam of radiation, i2, creates (among others) a beam of reflected radiation r2. We note that i2 and r2 are mirror images of i1 and r1, respectively, with respect to the plane of incidence. (After Hovenier 1970.)
