Distance against spectral type for the 1361 L and T dwarfs in the photo-type sample. The distances have been estimated from the J magnitude, using the relation between MJ and spectral type of Dupuy & Liu (2012). The spectral types have been determined to the nearest half sub type, but small random offsets have been added for this plot to separate overlapping points.
