Upper panel: comparison between the SFR and the contribution to the [C ii] luminosity from PDRs and electrons, and bottom panel: from cold H i and CO-dark H2 gas. In both panels the dashed straight lines represent fits to the data and the solid straight line is the relationship between the SFR and [C ii] luminosity fitted by de Looze et al. (2011) in a set of nearby galaxies. Typical uncertainties are 5% for the total [C ii] luminosity and the contribution from H i gas, 10% for the contribution from CO-dark H2 gas, and 30% for the contribution from ionized gas.
